Growing together: Building our community and our soil through composting
At Boerderij De Meent, healthy soil is vital for the cultivation of tasty and healthy vegetables. As part of our farm's educational trajectory, we followed the composting workshop in November by Ann Doherty at the Stadsboerderij Osdorp. The visit to this inspiring place helped us to see how composting can be done using different methods, which gave us inspiration on how to improve at our own farm. At the end, the workshop was not only insightful but also very informative, gi

Workshop about Seed Saving and preparing for winter
The summer is at its end, still we are harvesting abundantly from the garden. Yet the change in seasons is visible, with heavy rainfall, strong wind and declining temperatures, indicating that autumn is coming. With the change of the seasons, we need to prepare ourselves and the garden for the winter that is coming. In doing so and as part of the education trajectory at the farm, we followed the workshop “From autumn to winter in the garden & seed saving” by Ann Doherty, a w

The story of Eugene, our guardian of the chickens
De Meent is our piece of common land where our community, consisting of undocumented migrants and volunteers, share the responsibility to cultivate and maintain the land and keep livestock. At De Meent we provide a place to meet, grow food, and to develop our skills and knowledge. Within our 'Stories of De Meent’ series we would like to introduce our farm and our community. In this first story we will shed light to the chickens and their guardian, Eugene, who is originally f

Make your voice heard against the Asylum Emergency Act
The Protestantse Diacon ie is committed to supporting neglected people in society. We are therefore taking a stand against the new Asylum Emergency Act . Join us and make your voice heard. Here you can read what the Senate's bill entails. The new Asylum Emergency Act makes it a criminal offense to provide assistance to undocumented people. This means no care, no shelter, and no food. In response to this bill, the Protestantse Diaconie wrote an urgent letter : "Human

No Harvest Festival this year
Earlier this year, we asked you to reserve the date for the Harvest Festival. Unfortunately, the Harvest Festival will not take place this year. This fall, our focus is entirely on continuity at the farm. In addition, the renovation of the barn is well underway. This requires considerable time and energy, but it will also result in something special: a space that will form the beating heart of the farm, with a kitchen, canteen and workshops for our participants' learning prog

Farewell Marten Verdenius
From the very beginning, Marten was involved with De Meent as a farmer and pioneer, playing a key role in shaping the vision and development of this project. He is saying goodbye now and will end his duties on October 1st. After eight years of dedication to De Meent (and 11 years of involvement with the Diaconie), Marten has decided to focus entirely on his company, MOMA . With gratitude for his dedication and commitment, we wish Marten and his family all the best in this n

Looking back on a busy Amstelland Day
On June 1st it was finally time: our open day, as part of the larger Amstelland day. And what a great time we had with the beautiful weather! Jacobine, our fantastic garden volunteer (see image below), wrote a short review of the day: Amstelland Day at De Meent | June 1, 2025 It is exactly one year ago that I first set foot on the grounds of De Meent. The annual Amstelland Day, the open day with tours, workshops and market stalls. Pancakes are baked thanks to the chickens a

Our Greenhouse is finished!

The greenhouse was built with mostly second-hand materials, which brought with it the necessary challenges. This beautiful addit

Sawmill De Meent
Since June 2024, Boerderij de Meent has a real sawmill! Wood is a wonderful product to work with. This machine allows us to saw out rough logs, beams and planks for all kinds of purposes. With the woodworking shop that is currently under construction, we hope to be able to make beautiful workpieces from the rough sawn material with the participants of De Meent. The sawmill was set up in collaboration with our carpentry coordinator Heico Melis, who also manages the sawmill
