Our Greenhouse is finished!

After a long wait, the time has finally come. On the yard of the Meent stands a beautiful robust Greenhouse! Below we take you through the construction process where, under the guidance of our coordinator of the Construction Task Group - Heico Melis - together with the participants and volunteers of the Meent, we have built a glass house of 60m2. The greenhouse was built with mostly second-hand materials, which brought with it the necessary challenges.

This beautiful addition to the vegetable garden is the ideal place for heat-loving plants such as tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, but also ginger, peppers and all kinds of other plants that both the participants and social projects (where our harvest goes) love. The greenhouse ensures a professionalization of the cultivation, which means we will get more and a more diverse yield. We are very happy with it and proud of it!

With many thanks to Maatschappij van Welstand, the Channah Foundation, and the Till Foundation – thanks to them, we were able to realize this amazing greenhouse.

After a long process to obtain a permit, we were finally able to start in May 2024 with setting out the measurements and excavating down to the clay. In June, the foundation footings were poured, and in July, we began formwork for the ring beam, poured it, and prepared the footings for the steel structure.

September, October, and November 2024 were dedicated to the steel structure, installing the wooden beams, and fitting the second-hand aluminum profiles and glass. In December, the frames with doors were installed, and just in time for the Christmas break, the greenhouse could finally be locked up!

The opening! Last January 2025 with a ribbon and a warm lunch. Soon the tomatoes, hot peppers and cucumbers will be growing to the ceiling!
